I joined the Vintage Road Racing Association in 1992 and after watching the races for the season decided I needed to find a bike to race. Originally I was going to build a Honda CB350 and had aquired two whole bikes with three motors for the project. One frame was bent, the other rusted out, so I sold the whole lot for $100 and bought the beat up R5 pictured here for the same amount of money.

I was asked at the time why I would bother to take pictures of such a mess of a bike. I replied "just wait, you'll see why". The motor was in a box with what looked like a seized cylinder and the crank had a bent rod. The frame was filthy and somone had tried to repaint the body panels but quit half way through. The bike was stripped down to the frame and out came the grinder.

It took me the better part of the day but in the end I had cut off 15lbs of useless brackets and tabs from the frame. The forks were stripped down along with the rims and the swingarm. New bearings were installed in the wheels and the rims polished back up to par with some SOS pads. Fresh 20wt oil was added to the completely cleaned forks with new seals and polished sliders. A couple of brackets were cut off the swingarm and black paint was applied after a good sandblasting.
